Customer's Dilemma - Word of Mouth v/s Internet Marketing
Gone are the days when just a few advertisements about your products and services were enough to sell them and make profit. Today, as the number of customers grows, so does the number of brands competing in the market for the same products. Though the products might seem to be the same (offering almost the same services at approximately the same cost), what is it that sets some products apart from the rest of them? Of course, the quality of a product plays an important role, but there are so many other dynamics that make or break a product's popularity among the masses.
Consider this scenario. A homemaker, Pooja sees an advertisement of a shampoo on her television saying that it will give her smooth, shiny and strong hair (we will call it brand A). Pooja feels that it could be good for her and thinks of trying it. She switches channels and sees almost a similar advertisement, but this time of a different brand (we will call it brand B). This shampoo is also offering the same thing. So, in which brand should she invest her money ? She thinks of asking her friends who come up with different suggestions, most of them suggesting brand A. Her husband suggests that a quick search on the internet might help her. She decides to browse the internet to see what people have to say about these brands.
Though her friend Priya feels that brand A is much better in terms of price and quality, the people talking on the internet feel that brand B has been in the market for a longer time and hence is a better bet. She compares the two options and finally decides to go for brand B. She tries it and likes the brand too. She recommends this to Priya and even she gives it a try. They both regularly use the product.
What made Priya choose brand B? Few people's opinions about a brand made her feel that brand B would be better. Though this was a gain for brand B, it was a clear loss for brand A, which has lost a loyal customer (Priya). If people on the internet had been talking about brand A too, maybe Pooja would have gone for the same. Also, if her friends would have suggested brand B, it is possible that Pooja will have directly selected brand B, without browsing the internet.
So you see, your brands need to get a good feedback from not only the common man (homemakers, people at the workplace, etc), but also from people who regularly discuss things on the internet.
